Futures trading hours are not the same as stock-market hours. Many popular CME Group futures trade almost 23 hours per day from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon, with a scheduled daily maintenance break, while the busiest trading window may be concentrated around the U.S. cash session. Exact availability depends on the contract, exchange, holiday calendar and broker—not simply on whether a chart is moving. This guide separates CME Globex trading hours from regular trading hours (RTH), extended or overnight sessions, trade dates and maintenance breaks, then shows how to interpret the schedule for ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, Gold and WTI Crude Oil. It also explains why Chicago, New York and Australian time conversions shift with daylight saving.

What time does the futures market open and close?

There is no single opening bell for all futures. A useful starting point for widely traded CME equity-index contracts is CME Globex trading from Sunday at 5:00 p.m. through Friday at 4:00 p.m. Central Time, with a one-hour daily maintenance window from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. CT. That is approximately 23 available trading hours per typical weekday, not uninterrupted 24-hour trading and not an assurance of Sunday-to-Saturday access.

Gold benchmark futures (GC) and WTI crude oil (CL) also commonly use a Sunday 5:00 p.m. to Friday 4:00 p.m. CT pattern with a daily 4:00–5:00 p.m. break. These are normal-session reference times, not a substitute for checking the current official product specification and CME holiday calendar. Some contracts have different schedules, and special holidays can shorten, delay or cancel an otherwise normal session.

CME Globex versus regular trading hours (RTH)

CME Globex is the electronic venue through which many futures trade outside the daytime U.S. session. RTH, or regular trading hours, is a narrower daytime window used for a given market, product or charting convention. A chart labelled RTH may deliberately omit overnight bars even though real trading and price discovery occurred during those hours.

For U.S. equity-index analysis, traders often use the 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New York cash equity session as a reference, but this is not a universal definition of each futures contract’s exchange RTH. Platforms can label, plot and aggregate session templates differently. Always check whether an indicator or backtest uses an exchange-defined session, a cash-market proxy or a custom timetable.

ES and MES trading hours: S&P 500 futures

E-mini S&P 500 (ES) and Micro E-mini S&P 500 (MES) represent different contract sizes on the same index. They generally follow the same broad Sunday-evening-to-Friday-afternoon Globex schedule: 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT with a daily 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT maintenance period. Their price-per-point exposure differs, but moving from ES to MES does not create extra trading hours.

Pay particular attention to the U.S. economic-data calendar, the 8:30 a.m. CT/9:30 a.m. ET U.S. stock-market opening and the afternoon close. The overnight futures session can react to global news, but volume and order-book depth are not uniform across the entire 23-hour period. A broker may also restrict reduced-margin day trading outside a defined time window.

NQ and MNQ trading hours: Nasdaq-100 futures

E-mini Nasdaq-100 (NQ) and Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) trade on a very similar Globex calendar to ES and MES. For a normal non-holiday week, the common electronic session starts Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT, runs through Friday at 4:00 p.m. CT, and pauses daily from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. CT. The smaller MNQ multiplier changes dollar risk per price move but does not create a separate session calendar.

Nasdaq futures may move forcefully around U.S. technology earnings, inflation releases and the cash-market open. An overnight strategy that was tested on NQ/MNQ extended-hours data should not be evaluated against an RTH-only chart without checking which price bars were excluded.

Gold futures hours: GC and MGC versus 1OZ

Benchmark Gold (GC) and Micro Gold (MGC) typically trade Sunday through Friday on the near-23-hour electronic schedule, with a one-hour maintenance break beginning at 4:00 p.m. Central Time. Gold can experience meaningful activity during Asian, European and U.S. hours, so a trader should separate exchange availability from a strategy’s preferred liquidity window.

An important 2026 exception is CME’s 1-Ounce Gold product (1OZ), which has a 24/7 schedule apart from its own defined maintenance windows. That exception must not be generalised to GC or MGC. A strategy that switches gold contracts must separately validate sessions, expiry, broker support and symbol mapping.

WTI crude oil hours: CL and micro crude oil

WTI Light Sweet Crude Oil (CL) generally trades on CME Globex Sunday 5:00 p.m. to Friday 4:00 p.m. Central Time, with a daily one-hour break beginning at 4:00 p.m. CT. The availability window is long because crude oil is a globally traded commodity, but the character of the market changes around U.S. energy reports, geopolitical developments and the New York trading day.

Micro WTI Crude Oil (MCL) provides smaller per-contract exposure than standard CL, but its operating schedule and broker permissions should still be verified for the exact instrument. Do not interpret an EIA report time, futures settlement time or physical delivery deadline as the daily electronic market close.

What happens during the daily futures maintenance break?

The maintenance break is a planned interruption of normal matching on affected CME Globex products. During a standard 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT break, traders should not assume ordinary continuous order execution or immediate modification of every working order. A broker interface may show a position, stale quote or order status even though the matching session is closed.

An automated workflow should stop new entries before the cutoff according to its own safety buffer, check outstanding orders and reconcile broker state after the reopen. Some orders can persist across sessions while others expire depending on time-in-force and product rules. The platform’s behaviour is not a substitute for the exchange rules.

Does the futures market open on Sunday?

For many traditional CME futures, the weekly electronic session reopens on Sunday at approximately 5:00 p.m. Chicago time, unless an exchange holiday or special schedule changes the opening. This makes Sunday evening in the United States the start of the next trading week for many equity, metals and energy contracts.

The evening price gap relative to Friday’s close may reflect news that arrived while the product was shut. Brokers may initially show limited liquidity or wider spreads near the open. A stop order resting from Friday does not guarantee execution at the Friday reference price when the market reopens.

Can you trade futures on Saturday or all weekend?

Most familiar contracts such as ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, GC, MGC and CL do not have ordinary Saturday trading sessions. Friday afternoon normally marks the start of the weekend closure until the scheduled Sunday reopen. Saying that futures trade 24 hours a day or 24/7 without naming the product is therefore misleading.

Some specialised products have 24/7 access and short weekend maintenance periods, such as CME 1-Ounce Gold in 2026. Their existence means the correct answer depends on the actual product code. A broker may still limit access to a new seven-day product even when the exchange lists a tradable weekend session.

Why Sunday evening may have Monday’s trade date

A futures exchange trade date is an accounting and clearing label rather than the current wall-clock calendar date. On many CME Globex contracts, the Sunday evening reopen begins activity assigned to the following Monday trade date; subsequent weekday evening sessions may be associated with the next business day.

This distinction matters for daily realised P&L, statements, strategy limits and settlement reports. Automated systems should store the exchange timestamp with a clear timezone and preserve the broker or clearing trade date separately instead of guessing the trade date from a server’s midnight boundary.

Cash-market open versus futures overnight price discovery

The U.S. equity cash market normally opens at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The corresponding futures may already have traded across the Asian and European sessions. As a result, the opening cash-market candle is not necessarily the first futures price of the day, and the overnight high or low may become an important reference for short-term setups.

A session-based strategy should decide in advance whether overnight data contributes to indicators, support and resistance, VWAP resets, range statistics or entry logic. Two charts using the same futures symbol can produce different signals when one uses all Globex bars and the other uses only an RTH template.

Asian, European and U.S. futures sessions

Traders often divide a continuous Globex day into Asian, European and U.S. activity windows. This language describes overlapping participation and liquidity tendencies rather than three completely separate futures exchanges opening and closing. Asia may be quieter for some U.S. index contracts while still being important for currencies and precious metals.

Europe’s opening can affect price discovery before the U.S. cash market begins, and the U.S. session often contains major scheduled economic announcements. No session guarantees a trend, tight spread or profitable setup. Backtest time-of-day filters by instrument and define the exact timezone used by the rule.

When is liquidity highest in ES, MNQ, gold and crude oil?

Liquidity is not the same as open-market status. Depth, volume and spread can change around the U.S. equity open for ES/MES and NQ/MNQ, around overlapping London/New York activity in gold, and around U.S. inventory news in crude oil. There can be significant movement outside those windows, but a market being open does not guarantee similar fill quality.

Compare typical bid-ask spread, market depth, expected slippage and realised execution during your intended window instead of choosing a time solely because a session label looks active. One tick of slippage on a frequently traded strategy can materially change its results.

How futures trading hours change with daylight saving

CME commonly expresses its regular product hours in U.S. Central Time, which alternates between CST (UTC−6) and CDT (UTC−5). New York alternates between EST and EDT. Because the exchange schedule is usually given in local Chicago time, its UTC equivalent changes when U.S. daylight saving starts and ends.

Australia and Europe change clocks on different dates, creating transition weeks when a fixed offset fails. Use an IANA timezone such as America/Chicago or America/New_York for conversion, and do not hard-code a year-round “add 16 hours” rule. Re-test automated session filters around both hemispheres’ daylight-saving changes.

Futures market hours in Melbourne and Australia

As a concrete example for 12 October 2026, Chicago observes CDT (UTC−5) while Melbourne observes AEDT (UTC+11), so Melbourne is 16 hours ahead. A normal Sunday 5:00 p.m. CT Globex reopen corresponds to Monday 9:00 a.m. in Melbourne, and a 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT weekday maintenance break corresponds to 8:00–9:00 a.m. on the following Melbourne calendar day.

These are date-specific conversions, not permanent Australian market hours. When U.S. or Australian daylight saving switches, the offset changes. Traders in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide may see different local clock times because not every Australian jurisdiction follows the same summer-time rules.

What is the difference between market close and settlement?

Daily settlement is a process used by the exchange and clearing system to determine a reference price and mark positions to market. It may occur before the final Globex session close or use an exchange-defined window. A settlement timestamp is therefore not necessarily the moment at which electronic orders stop matching.

Confusing settlement, RTH close, maintenance break and final trade date can lead to wrong strategy cutoffs. An intraday strategy should document the closing time relevant to order submission, while accounting or risk reconciliation may need a separate official settlement and trade-date schedule.

Holiday and early-close schedules in 2026

CME publishes a dedicated 2026 holiday and trading-hours calendar. U.S. holidays can produce early closes, delayed reopens or special product-by-product sessions. The presence of a holiday on a U.S. bank calendar does not by itself tell you whether ES, Gold or WTI futures are trading normally that day.

Before major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, verify the current exchange notice for the exact contract and date. CME states that holiday hours may be revised and often finalised closer to the event. Automated order schedules and broker maintenance windows should be checked again rather than copied from last year.

What pre-open means: orders versus execution

Some markets have a pre-open state before normal matching resumes. Depending on product and exchange rules, a platform may accept or queue certain messages in that state, but the availability of order entry must not be interpreted as an ordinary liquid trading session with executions taking place.

For an execution bot, distinguish market state (pre-open, open, paused, closed), broker connectivity and order eligibility. A green connection light is not evidence that the target contract is currently matching orders. Record why an entry was withheld or rejected.

How broker day-trading margin hours differ from exchange hours

A broker may advertise intraday margin rates only for a specified portion of the electronic session. That collateral policy is independent of the official exchange trading calendar. A market may still be open after a broker’s day-margin cutoff, with a larger maintenance or overnight requirement for the same open position.

Before enabling overnight holding, check both the exchange session and the broker’s account restrictions. A day-only strategy should not assume its lower margin requirement continues into the evening, and a session filter should not confuse a broker restriction with an exchange market halt.

TradingView RTH and extended-hours chart settings

TradingView and other charting platforms may offer session-specific chart templates or exchange symbols. An RTH series can have fewer candles than a full Globex series, and different data vendors may reset daily or intraday indicators at different points. That affects moving averages, VWAP, opening ranges and backtest entry conditions.

When comparing scripts or automating TradingView alerts, save the chart symbol, contract month or continuous series, session template, timezone, bar interval and rollover/back-adjustment settings alongside the strategy version. The same Pine Script can behave differently when the chart session changes.

An automated-trading checklist for futures session safety

A robust workflow checks whether the exact contract is eligible for orders now, whether new entries are permitted during the selected session, whether a holiday or maintenance break applies, whether the broker connection is healthy and whether account-level risk limits still permit the trade. Exit and risk-reducing actions may need a different policy from new risk-taking entries.

Test the Friday close, Sunday reopen, ordinary daily break, daylight-saving changes, early-close holidays, rollover dates and unexpected disconnects in paper or no-submit mode. Log the source event time, exchange trade date, broker acknowledgement and any held/rejected decision so the reason for a missed trade is auditable.

A simple futures-hours planning checklist

Start with the exact exchange-listed symbol (for example MES, MNQ, GC or CL), then find its normal Globex hours and holiday notices. Choose the RTH or all-session chart setting deliberately, define the permitted trade window in a named timezone, and distinguish that from the broker’s intraday margin schedule.

Finally decide what happens to positions and working orders before maintenance, at the Friday close and after the Sunday reopen. The goal is not to trade every available hour; it is to make each permitted session explicit, reproducible and consistent with the instrument’s real order-matching calendar.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the futures market open on Sunday?+

Many popular CME equity-index, gold and WTI crude-oil futures typically reopen Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Central Time (6:00 p.m. Eastern), subject to the current product and holiday schedule.

What time does the futures market close on Friday?+

For commonly traded ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, GC, MGC and CL, the normal Friday close is generally 4:00 p.m. Chicago time (5:00 p.m. Eastern). Verify the exact contract and any holiday adjustment.

Do futures trade 24 hours a day?+

Many mainstream CME contracts trade nearly 23 hours per weekday, with a scheduled daily maintenance break. Some newer contracts have product-specific 24/7 access, but that is not the general rule.

What is the CME Globex maintenance break?+

For many major equity-index, gold and crude-oil contracts the standard daily break is 4:00–5:00 p.m. Central Time, but maintenance windows differ by product and can change during holidays.

Are futures markets open on Saturday?+

Most traditional ES, NQ, GC, MGC and CL futures are closed for ordinary Saturday trading. Selected products, such as 1-Ounce Gold (1OZ), can have separate 24/7 schedules.

Are MES and MNQ futures open overnight?+

Yes, their normal CME electronic schedules include overnight hours from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon, outside the daily break and subject to holidays and broker support.

What is RTH in futures trading?+

RTH means regular trading hours, a product or platform-defined primary daytime session. It is narrower than the broader CME Globex electronic session for many markets.

Is the futures market open at 9:30 a.m. New York time?+

Many major CME equity-index futures are already trading before the U.S. stock cash market opens at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The cash open remains a key activity window, not the beginning of the whole electronic futures day.

What time does the CME futures market open in Melbourne?+

On 12 October 2026, a normal Sunday 5:00 p.m. Chicago reopen corresponds to Monday 9:00 a.m. Melbourne time. This conversion changes around U.S. and Australian daylight saving and must be recalculated for other dates.

Is the Sunday futures trading session part of Monday?+

For many CME contracts, trading that begins on Sunday evening is associated with the following Monday exchange trade date. Calendar dates and clearing trade dates should be stored separately.

Do holidays change futures trading hours?+

Yes. CME publishes product-specific holiday and early-close schedules, which can be different from normal Sunday-to-Friday hours. Check the applicable official notice before trading.

Can I hold futures during the maintenance break?+

An existing position does not automatically disappear during a scheduled trading pause, but order execution and management may be unavailable until the matching session reopens. Broker margin and liquidation policies still apply.

Does lower intraday margin mean the futures market is open?+

No. Broker day-margin windows and official exchange hours are different. The broker can change collateral requirements while a market remains open, or the exchange can be closed despite an active broker connection.

How should a trading bot handle RTH and extended trading hours?+

Define an instrument-specific timezone-aware schedule, check holiday and maintenance state, apply different new-entry and risk-reducing exit rules where appropriate, and log broker acknowledgements and blocked orders.
