IBKR paper testing
Interactive Brokers Paper Trading Automation
Paper trading is the safest place to prove that an automation workflow behaves the way the trader expects. It allows the signal format, account mapping, order direction, quantity, exits, and status handling to be tested without intentionally sending the same workflow to a live account.
What paper testing should prove
A useful paper test checks more than whether an order appears. It should verify the symbol, contract, side, quantity, order type, attached protection, broker status, and the behaviour of close instructions.
The goal is to validate the complete path from TradingView alert to the broker response, including what happens when a trade is intentionally blocked.
Keep paper and live modes explicit
A controlled system should not infer account mode from a strategy name or user expectation. The linked broker connection and execution mode need to be part of the validation process.
TradeLuma separates paper and live workflows so a paper strategy remains tied to the intended paper connection unless the user deliberately changes the configuration.
Test failure cases as well as successful trades
A strong rehearsal includes duplicate alerts, unsupported symbols, unavailable broker sessions, blocked directions, maximum-position rules, rejected orders, and close requests when no eligible position exists.
Testing only the happy path can leave important operational weaknesses undiscovered until the market is live.
Move to live only after the workflow is understood
Paper fills are not the same as live fills and cannot reproduce every liquidity, gap, slippage, or market-impact condition.
The value of paper automation is operational: it helps confirm that the software, alert, broker connection, and risk rules behave consistently before live trading risk is introduced.
Frequently asked questions
Is paper trading identical to live trading?+
No. Paper trading is useful for validating workflow and order logic, but it cannot perfectly reproduce real liquidity, slippage, gaps, or live broker execution.
What should I test before switching an automated workflow to live?+
Test message formatting, symbol and contract mapping, direction, quantity, entries, exits, duplicate handling, blocked scenarios, broker status updates, and recovery behaviour.
Does a successful paper test guarantee live results?+
No. A successful paper test validates workflow behaviour, not future strategy performance or live fill quality.
