A bracket order connects an entry with protective exit logic, commonly a take-profit leg and a stop-loss leg. In automated trading, bracket orders can be powerful, but they must be handled carefully because parent and child order states can change at different times.
How bracket orders work
A typical bracket has a parent entry order and attached exit legs. If the parent fills, the take-profit and stop-loss legs become relevant. If one exit leg fills, the other should usually be cancelled by the broker or execution system depending on how the order was submitted.
